Course Description: Business Information Technology is a two year program designed to educate, train, and provide guidance for secondary career & technical students who seek to develop the knowledge, skills, and behavioral characteristics necessary for successful entry-level employment in office occupations and/or who seek to enroll in a business related field in college. Students enrolled in the Business Information Technology Program will expand upon the skills mastered in previous technology courses. Training is provided in word processing, spreadsheets, database management, desktop publishing, and multimedia presentations. In addition, students will explore personal financial applications, including income taxes, payroll, insurance, and credit. Instruction also includes an introduction to accounting. Students apply skills acquired in projects designed to simulate real-world experiences, including but not limited to job interviews, dining etiquette, answering business phones, and responding to customer request. Students will also have the opportunity to earn industry certifications such as Microsoft Certifications.

A – Superior Work 90-100
B – Excellent Work 80-89
C – Average Work 70-79
D – Below Average 60-69
F – Failure 59-below

Attendance: Attending and being on time to work is an important aspect of the working world, therefore, students will be able to earn bonus points for being on time and present each day. These points will be added to their lowest grade at the end of each nine weeks.

10 points - No absences & no tardies (regardless of reason; exception: school related absences)
5 points - 1 to 2 excused absences with only excused tardies

Notebook Grade: Notebooks will be evaluated once every nine weeks and the students will receive a test grade based upon content, neatness, and organization.

Computer Filing System Grade: Each student’s filing systems (folders/subfolders) on his/her computer will be evaluated once each nine weeks and the student will receive a test grade based upon content, organization, and ease of navigation.

Email Grade: Students will be required to use their school email account to email the teacher at least once every two weeks. This will be considered a daily grade. The subject of the email must be related to the class. The student may ask questions concerning something we have discussed in class or a project or they may just make general comments regarding the subject matter being discussed that week.

On some occasions, they will be given specific topics to discuss/assignments to email to me.

Date Books/Planners: Each student’s planner will be checked and given a daily grade periodically throughout each nine weeks to ensure proper usage. Students are expected to have their planner with them at all times.

Typing Test: Typing is a major aspect of this course and therefore a typing test grade will be given each nine weeks. The typing grade scale will be distributed at the beginning of each nine weeks grading period.

A daily grade will be given weekly based on the student’s timed-writings for the week. The students will complete a timed-writing daily and on Fridays their best time for the week to be graded.

Job Shadowing: Each student will be required to job shadow during the second semester. Attendance to job shadowing assignments will be counted as a test grade at the end of the grading period. The details and requirements of the job shadowing are still in the works and will be given out as soon as available.

REMIND: The Remind text messaging program will be used as a communication means between the students, parents, and teacher. Students will be held responsible for all information sent out via Remind. These messages may be checked via text message, the Remind app, and/or email.

Students will need access to the Internet in order to check their Remind messages. Any device (cell phone, tablet, or computer) with Internet access or data can be used to receive the Remind messages.

Parents are encouraged to sign up for the Remind messages as well in order to keep up with due dates and class happenings. Please sign up for your designated class period & for the FBLA Remind by texting the following code to 81010:

Future Business Leaders of America: Also known as FBLA, it is the largest career student business organization in the world. FBLA-PBL inspires and prepares students to become community-minded business leaders in a global society through relevant career preparation and leadership experiences.

Every student is recommended to join FBLA. Each student will be required to participate in FBLA Community Service Projects along with a competition event on the local level. FBLA also offers competition events on the District, State, and National levels. FBLA competition events will be a graded activity during the 3^rd nine weeks and participation in other FBLA projects throughout the school year may result in extra credit or additional grades.

FBLA also offers multiple scholarship opportunities.

Microsoft Office Specialist Certifications: Microsoft certifications validate the skills to implement business solutions using Microsoft technologies. Microsoft provides the core business and productivity software that organizations depend on. These are international industry certifications that will give our students a leg up in the working world.

Students will be given opportunities to take or retake MOS certification exams from the previous year. Students will also be highly encouraged to work towards the MOS Specialist and Master certifications. The exams will be dependent upon available class time or will need to be scheduled for after school.

Students’ scores will also be automatically entered in the MOS State Championship, which may lead to a National Microsoft competition event, monetary awards, certificates, and prizes.

Electronic Devices: Electronic devices, including earbuds/headphones, are to remain in a student’s backpack, purse, or other bag in the designated area. Electronic devices should be placed on silent and are not allowed on the student desks or workstations and may NOT be charged in the classroom.

Students who are wearing hoodies with a front pocket, jackets/coats, or baggy clothing may be asked to empty pockets to eliminate any suspension of a student having an electronic device. Consequences of usage of electronic devices will be discussed in detail with students and will be strictly adhered to.

Break: Students will be given a 10 to 12 minutes break at some point during the class period. This break allows for students to use the restrooms, grab a snack/drink (there will be NO vending machines), and socialize for a few moments. Breaks are a privilege and can be denied.
