Child Development
Child Development: This course is designed to develop skills related to physical, social, intellectual and emotional development of the child. It includes instruction on considerations for parenthood, parental care, child growth and development, behavior management, needs of exceptional children, and career opportunities. Students in grades 9 – 12 can earn ½ Carnegie unit of an elective.

Competencies:
- Discuss considerations before parenting
- Analyze the importance of good parenting.
- Examine responsibilities of good parenting.
- Discuss the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual needs of the infant from birth to one year.
- Discuss meeting physical, emotional, social, and intellectual needs of children from one to three years of age.
- Analyze strategies for managing behavior.
- Demonstrate how to handle common child misbehavior such as temper tantrums, separation anxiety, sibling conflicts, aggression, and so forth.
- Determine ways to meet the needs of an exceptional child.
- Examine types of child abuse.
- Analyze methods of dealing with crises affecting parent-child relationships such as divorce, moving, death, and family crises.
- Discuss professional organization credentialing and state licensure.
- Explore career and job opportunities in the field of child development.
