Class Materials Needed:

• (2) 3 Ring Binders
  • 1 should be big enough to keep handouts, notes, etc
  • 1 should be a 1inch binder that will be used for your portfolio
• (2) Dividers
  • Set of 8 for each pack. 1 set will be used for each binder.
• College Ruled Paper
• PT Uniform (Order form attached)
• Pens/Pencils

 

Course Description:

This course focuses on the history of law and legal systems in the United States. Students will leave the class with a firm foundation of knowledge in these areas. Additionally, students will learn the importance of personal health and safety in the work environments associated with law and public safety. Students will also be introduced to the emergency services found in local communities. Additionally, students will focus on corrections in the state of Mississippi, studying specifically how jails and prisons function.

Class Expectations/Procedures:

• Students are expected to adhere to all DCS guidelines. See CTC/DCS handbook for these guidelines.

Absent/Make Up Work:

All homework assigned to students will be due at the beginning of class. Homework turned in after class has started may be counted as late and result in 10% loss. Assignments may be given in class and/or posted online through Canvas.
If the student is going to be absent from class, their assignment(s) and any handouts will be placed in the appropriate location. Students with excused absences will be given time to complete his or her assignments as stated in the school handbook.
Assignments that are not turned in on time will be entered as zeros until the student resolves the grade. Students should keep all returned work as “proof” that the work was done.
If a student is caught with “copied” work, they will receive no credit for the assignment.

Canvas:

Our class website is located at www.mde.instructure.com. Here you will find copies of assignments, power-points, tests, unit vocabulary, and other links and resources that may be used to help reinforce topics being discussed. This site can also be used to receive announcements/reminders of important dates and information!

I expect you to utilize this site often and take advantage of the opportunities it will offer you. Once all login information has been received, we will tour the website to allow each of you to get used to it and learn where everything can be found.

 

Technology Usage:

Cellphones/music devices are not to be used at any time during class. Texting/Social media is unacceptable at any time during class. Students should refer to the CTC handbook for the cellphone policy.

 

Physical Training:

As a course requirement and requirement in the career field, students are expected to participate in physical training 2 hours per week. This may include strength training and cardio which uses sport equipment/body weight training. While I understand that each of you are different, students are expected to participate to the best of his or her ability on PT days. Those who are not actively participating, talking too much, complaining will receive point deductions for each time observed. Students are also expected to dress is their complete PT uniform. This includes CTC Shirt & Shorts and tennis shoes. Failure to dress in any of these items is a 15% deduction for each missing item. Students will be expected to participate on PT days unless there is a medical excuse on file.

 

Portfolios:

A portfolio is an excellent opportunity for each student to check their understanding of topics on an ongoing basis. It allows you to add pieces of work that positively represent work that you may be proud of. This may include a high test score, a project, and a research paper to name a few.

Throughout the year you will be expected to work on and complete your portfolio. Your portfolio is your opportunity to keep major activities and assignments that you have completed throughout the year. There will be ample time to work on the portfolios and refer to them as we work through the year. The portfolio will be graded for completion and be included in the semester final (even if you are exempt).

 

Skills USA:

SkillsUSA members participate in local, state, and national activities provided through trade and industrial, technical, and health occupations courses and programs. The mission of SkillsUSA is to develop leadership skills and workplace competencies that students will need to success in a constantly changing global workplace. The organization provides many opportunities for leadership development and skills training. Competition in over 70 leadership, health occupations, occupationally related, and trade, industrial, and technical contests is offered at the region and state levels, culminating with the SkillsUSA Championships in June.

All students are encouraged to join SkillsUSA!

 

Media:            

The program uses various videos, DVDs, audio tapes, programs, and similar media that may contain profanity, and/or gruesome images as a part of the class. While all efforts are made to minimize such material, it is sometimes unavoidable in the course of addressing some course content (i.e. Crime scene pictures, autopsies, etc). Parents are encouraged to discuss any concerns with the instructor.

 

Media Release:

The Law & Justice Program as well as Skills USA is active in many community events, and our activities are sometimes published in our local newspapers, newsletters, and publications.  Students may be photographed, interviewed, and quoted for use in such media.
